Grate – The House Of Cheese is a warm, friendly venue located snugly in the shelter of Clement’s Arcade, opposite Leigh Church.
I found myself, on a cold wintry afternoon, in this warm and welcoming location where I had planned to enjoy a simple coffee and perhaps a warm sandwich. I was amazed by quite how seriously they take their grilled cheese.
With full accessibility and actual music playing on the radio rather than the default Heart employed by some cafes, I felt immediately at home. The menu includes some of the best skinny fries I’ve tasted, and a selection of cheesy goods, from Italian classic pasta dishes to burgers. With so many tasty goods on the menu I was unable to choose between goats cheese and onion, pastrami with all the trimmings or a pulled pork toastie, so I asked for their recommendation. I was immediately sold on the idea of a toasted cheese and kimchi sandwich, which is the combination I never knew I needed!
With delicious filter coffee and a range of other enticing drinks, I left feeling highly satisfied by this reasonably-priced meal and even bought some locally made chutney, which is still in good service whenever I need a cheese fix at home.
