I have been amazed at how difficult it is to get proper, authentic pie and mash in a city like Southend, full as it is with displaced Londoners. What passes for pie and mash in some cafes is just that – a pie, some mash and some gravy. Which is fine for some.
But if you’re looking for the truly authentic taste of the East End, Brickie’s is by far and away the best place in town.
The menu is simple, nourishing and amazing value for money. Select any number of hot meat pies, filled with tasty gravy; a couple of scoops of mash, garnish with a few stewed eels and some fresh, delicious parsley sauce. Add a generous dash of white pepper and some chilli vinegar and prepare to be sent to heaven.
