Brickie’s Pie And Mash is situated in the lower floor of the Victoria Shopping Centre, where the old Cambella Cafe used to be, with an entrance by the Chichester Road bus stops.

I have been amazed at how difficult it is to get proper, authentic pie and mash in a city like Southend, full as it is with displaced Londoners. What passes for pie and mash in some cafes is just that – a pie, some mash and some gravy. Which is fine for some.

But if you’re looking for the truly authentic taste of the East End, Brickie’s is by far and away the best place in town.

The menu is simple, nourishing and amazing value for money. Select any number of hot meat pies, filled with tasty gravy; a couple of scoops of mash, garnish with a few stewed eels and some fresh, delicious parsley sauce. Add a generous dash of white pepper and some chilli vinegar and prepare to be sent to heaven.

Pie and mash was built on this principle. There is literally no wastage in the menu – everything gets used. It’s cheap, filling and quick food for the masses. With an enviable 4.8 out of 5 from 90 reviews on Google and a five-star hygiene rating, this is British fast food at its best.

I instantly knew my next meal was in the hands of someone capable and responsible.

The service is speedy and friendly. The owner is an authentic East End Londoner who literally has liquor in his blood. The meal you’re eating has been being made in his family for generations, untouched by time. You can order, eat and finish a hot meal in 20 minutes, while you’re waiting for your next bus.
